This page describes the cookies and equivalent technologies in use on sportspersia.com, why each kind is here, and how to get rid of the ones you do not want. It complements the Privacy Policy.
The Technologies in Question
A cookie is a small file stored by your browser at a site’s request and returned on later visits. Local and session storage do a similar job with more capacity. Pixel tags are invisible image requests that report that something loaded. Advertising creatives sometimes carry scripts of their own. This policy treats all of them alike, because they raise the same question: what is being recorded about you, and by whom.
Two distinctions matter. First party means set by sportspersia.com; third party means set by another company whose code runs on our page. Session means deleted when you close the browser; persistent means it survives until it expires or you remove it.
Categories in Use Here
Strictly necessary
Required to deliver the site: routing, caching, load balancing, protection against automated abuse, and storing the privacy choices you have already made so you are not asked again on every page. There is no opt-out, because without them there is no site. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in providing what you requested.
Preference
These remember small choices, such as a notice you dismissed or a display setting. Blocking them means being asked the same things repeatedly and nothing worse.
Measurement — none
There is none. This site sets no statistics cookie, no identifier of ours travels with you from one article to the next, and no analytics product is installed. The only traffic figure we have is a count of the pages requested, taken from the access log the web server keeps in any case and read in aggregate. That involves no cookie at all, so this category has nothing in it to accept or refuse.
Advertising
Set mostly by our advertising partners rather than by us. They select which advertisement to serve, limit how often you see the same one, verify that an advertisement was genuinely visible on screen, detect fraudulent traffic and, where permitted, build interest profiles used to target advertising across other sites. This is the category with real privacy consequences, and it is the one the controls below are aimed at.
In the EEA and the United Kingdom nothing in this category runs before you consent. In the United States it may run by default, subject to the opt-out rights set out in the Privacy Policy.
Consent records
If you are shown a consent notice, your answer has to be stored somewhere or you would be asked again on every page. That record sits in the strictly necessary category, contains your choice and the time it was made, and exists so that we can demonstrate we honored it. Deleting it deletes the proof, which is why clearing your cookies brings the notice back.
Who Sets What
The necessary and preference cookies are ours, along with the record of your consent choice. Almost everything in the advertising category is set by partners whose code runs on the page, under their own privacy policies. We choose which partners appear on the site; we do not control the individual cookies they set once they are there.
Lifetimes
Necessary and preference cookies generally run from a single session up to twelve months. Third-party advertising cookies vary between roughly thirty days and thirteen months, and the partner that sets one controls how long it lives. We do not.
Withdrawing Consent
A choice made once is not permanent. Clearing this site’s cookies in your browser resets it: the consent notice reappears on your next visit and you can answer differently. Withdrawal applies going forward and does not reverse processing that already took place lawfully.
Browser Controls
Every current browser can block third-party cookies, delete stored ones, or refuse cookies altogether.
Browsing in a private window is the crudest and most reliable control, since everything is discarded when the window closes.
Opting Out Across Many Companies at Once
- Digital Advertising Alliance WebChoices, United States
- Network Advertising Initiative
- Your Online Choices, Europe
- Google Ads Settings
Each of these records your opt-out in a cookie of its own, so wiping your cookies wipes the opt-out with it. The Global Privacy Control signal, sent by a browser or extension, is more durable, and we treat it as a valid opt-out request everywhere the law recognizes it.
What Changes If You Block Advertising Cookies
Not the number of advertisements. Blocking changes how they are chosen: contextually, from the subject of the article and a rough location, rather than from a profile of your browsing. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working at all.
Updates
Partners and technologies change. When they do, this page is revised and the date at the top updated. Questions: [email protected].
