An English-Language Desk for Iranian Sports

SportsPersia covers sports in Iran, and Iranian athletes wherever they compete, in English, for readers who cannot follow the Persian-language press.

That gap is the reason the site exists. Domestic coverage of the Persian Gulf Pro League, of national wrestling championships, of the volleyball and weightlifting programs, is extensive, and almost all of it is in Persian. International wire coverage of Iranian sports, by contrast, is thin and arrives only when something reaches global news: a World Cup draw, an Olympic medal, a controversy. Between those moments very little makes it to an English-reading audience.

We work in that space. The league table in March. The qualifying campaign nobody outside the region is tracking. The wrestler two tournaments away from being the best in the world.

What We Publish

  • Latest News — results, appointments, squad announcements, federation decisions and transfers, as they happen.
  • Match Statistics — the numbers behind results, from domestic league fixtures to continental and international ties.
  • Team Insights — how a squad is built, what a coach is trying to do, and why it is or is not working.
  • Athlete and Player Profiles — careers explained properly, including the context a results list leaves out.
  • Upcoming Events — what is on the calendar, who has qualified, and what is at stake.

The Sports We Follow

Football carries the most weight, at both ends: the domestic league and the Tehran derby between Persepolis and Esteghlal, and the national team’s road through Asian qualifying to the World Cup. Alongside it we cover the disciplines in which Iran competes at the top of the world rather than the top of the region — freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, volleyball, futsal and basketball.

We also follow Iranian and Iranian-heritage athletes competing abroad, from European football leagues to combat sports promotions in the United States, and we cover racket sports, competitive gaming and sports technology as they take hold in the region.

Pahlevani and Zoorkhanei rituals have their own place here. The practice is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage, it is centuries older than anything else on this site, and it is still practiced. Treating it as a curiosity would be a mistake.

International Coverage, and Why It Belongs Here

We write about the Champions League, the major European leagues, the NBA and the Grand Slams as well. That is not padding. Iranian players are on those rosters, Iranian audiences follow those competitions closely, and a site about Iranian sports that ignored the world its athletes compete in would be describing half the picture.

How We Work

We read the Persian-language sources — federation announcements, club statements, domestic sports media — and we verify before we translate. Names are transliterated to a consistent standard, and where an athlete has an established spelling in international competition we use theirs rather than ours. Figures from domestic competitions are checked against more than one source, because they are not always consistent. The Editorial Policy sets out the method in full.

Independence

SportsPersia is not affiliated with any federation, club, ministry, league or sponsor. No organization sees our coverage before it publishes, and none is offered the chance to. The site is funded by advertising placed beside the articles, and advertisers have no influence over what we write. Where an article involves any commercial arrangement, it is labeled above the first paragraph.

Corrections

We correct in the open and we date the correction. The spelling of a name, a disputed statistic, a transfer that did not happen the way it was reported — write to [email protected] and we will check it. The Contact page explains what to include.
